Art Gallery Internships at the University of Free State 2016

The University of Free State invites applications for 2 Art Gallery Internships in the Faculty of the Humanities (contract appointment: 1 year). This internship forms part of the Programme of Innovation in Artform Development (PIAD), which is supported by the Andrew Mellon Foundation.Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist with the running of PIAD activities and projects.

  • Assist with administrative duties and other duties as needed.

  • Work with national and international artists and diverse communities.

  • Report to the co-ordinator and programme directors.

  • Assist with the evaluation, recording and cataloguing of projects.

  • Assist with and develop educational programmes related to projects.

  • Conduct comprehensive research towards developing projects.


  • Bachelor’s degree within the Arts or Humanities field.

  • Driver’s licence (Recommended).

Required competencies:

  • A keen interest in and knowledge of contemporary arts.

  • A keen interest in art administration.

  • Good communication, interpersonal and networking skills.

The following criteria apply to the selection of candidates:

  • Not currently participating in an existing learnership/internship programme.

  • Willing to sign a learnership/internship agreement with the UFS.

  • Candidate must be available for a period of 1 year to participate in the project.

  • Postgraduate qualification will serve as a recommendation.

Assumption of duties: 1 January 2016.
