Development Intern Mainstream 2016

Mainstream is seeking dynamic and enthusiastic individuals from a wide background, especially in the fields of engineering, environmental and spatial planning. Relevant experience within the renewable energy field would be an advantage. A deep passion for renewable energy is an imperative. This is a 12 month internship contract, based in Newlands (Cape Town) with occasional travel within South Africa.
The Development Intern will support Mainstream Development team members through the complete project development lifecycle from project inception to start of construction. The successful candidate will be involved in wind and solar projects. Activities will cover all aspects of development including environmental studies, permitting, engineering, landowner and other stakeholder management and engagement, site selection, interaction with Eskom and access to the national grid, various government permitting requirements and a number of private sector permissions. The Development Intern will also be part of Mainstream’s bidding efforts to the REIPPPP and bringing Preferred Bidder projects to Financial Close, as well as supporting other Mainstream teams/ departments as and when required.
Support the development process
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES: assist the Development team members to oversee / manage external consultants appointed for identified projects.
REIPPPP: assist development team members to prepare projects for DOE’s procurement projects, ensuring accurate documentation and filing documents.
PUBLIC OUTREACH: assist in the wind and solar project EIA public participation processes as well as community interventions in identified projects.
PERMITTING: support the permitting processes for identified wind and solar projects.
LAND: assist in landowner meetings; design and issue landowner newsletters; gain familiarity with the full land agreement processes and all involved parties, including land agents, landowners, Mainstream employees, local recording offices, land title agents and insurers, etc.
SITE SELECTION: apply Mainstream site selection criteria and evaluate any new possibilities.
GRID ACCESS: assist development team members and prepare required documentation to engage Eskom and secure project grid access.
ENGINEERING: assist development team members to oversee / manage external consultants appointed to perform prelim engineering studies and site design.
Document and administer all project related information, as required.
Be involved, as directed, in all the relevant industry bodies’ initiatives including researching certain aspects.
Undertaking project-related administrative tasks.
Carrying out of other related tasks as and when required.
