Internship as M&E Advisor 2016

The Aurum Institute is offering a great opportunity to suitably qualified and experienced staff to contribute towards our mission to improve the health of people and communities through innovation in Global Health Research, Systems and Delivery. We are focused on research, support and implementing integrated approaches to managing TB and HIV.
The following positions have become available as part of the Health System Division projects and you are welcome to apply should you meet the requirements of the position.
2 positions based in Ekurhuleni, 1 in Brits, and 1 in Mafikeng
Will undergo a 6 month internship in performing monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of public sector health programmes, with the opportunity of further permanent employment at the end of the internship if found competent as an M&E Advisor to the public health sector.
• Undergo formal training in M&E principles, methods and practice; Quality improvement methods; and South African public health data sets such as DHIS,,, etc.
• With supervision and mentoring by an M&E specialist, undertake ‘job shadowing’ of specialist clinicians to learn about HIV and TB disease management programmes, and gain a better understanding of programme indicators.
• Complete assignments for a ‘Portfolio of evidence’ to demonstrate competency at the end of the internship, which might require analysis of the HIV and TB indicator sets of a public health district, in-depth evaluation of selected programme outcomes using quantitative methods, and development of a quality improvement plan.
• A Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Statistics, Mathematics, Population Studies or Public Health
• Minimum 2 years’ work experience in Monitoring & Evaluation, Research, and/or Health services
• Computer literacy and a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
• A valid driver’s license, and be able to undertake occasional overnight travel
A working knowledge of Access, STATA, Epi Info or other research database will be an advantage
