Sports Reporter Internship 2016

Are you a green-and-gold-blooded, sports-obsessed journalist or recent graduate who is efficient and organised with an OCD-like attention to detail? This could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

The successful candidate will be required to:
  • Write accurate daily sport reports, source accompanying visuals and communicate with all stakeholders to make sure that reports are delivered accurately and in an entertaining manner
  • Create and manage a sporting calendar with all major pro sport and youth sport fixtures
  • Prepare fixtures and stories in advance and meet deadlines
  • Keep up to date on relevant sporting news and pitch all relevant stories on a daily basis 
  • Build and maintain industry contacts and relationships, and canvas topical sporting stars for interviews and picture shoots
  • Consider fresh approaches to sport reporting, find lifestyle content angles and pitch content and treatment ideas that exhibit out of the box thinking
  • Cover youth sport content on a regular basis and identify and report on up and coming school sporting talent
  • Develop contacts with sporting PR figures and schools around the country
  • Assist other team members with sport-related research and writing assignments
  • Be willing to take on non-sporting related assignments if and when required


  • Journalism qualification
  • Fast, accurate writing ability
  • Excellent use of the English language
  • Ability to write in other South African languages preferred 
  • Experience in broadcasting preferred
  • Prepared to work unusual, sometimes long hours
  • Organised
  • Self motivated
  • Deadline driven
  • Able to accept feedback and criticism, and implement improvements
  • Take ownership of assigned stories and accept responsibility for their execution from start to finish


  • Video editing ability
  • Camerawork ability
  • On-camera reporting experience
  • Fluency in Xhosa, Zulu or other South African languages
