4x Legal Internship at ProBono.Org 2017

ProBono.Org pro­vid­es free legal ser­vices to vul­ner­a­ble and mar­gin­alised clients and communities by sending cases to willing attorneys and advocates through its clearing house function. 

It also runs various legal clinics, while managing special projects focusing on particularly vulnerable groups. One of these projects involves children that need legal representation.

ProBono.Org seeks to appoint four Legal Interns, based in Johannesburg. 

Closing date: Thursday, 14 December 2017

Start Date: January 2018.

  • Providing a legal service to ProBono.Org client
  • Interview persons seeking legal assistance or any person acting on their behalf
  • Assess their matters in terms of the ProBono.Org criteria
  • Consult with your supervisor on the best strategy for dealing with each matter, such as direct assistance, mediation, litigation or another form of legal intervention
  • Prepare detailed briefs for legal practitioners in matters which require pro bono legal assistance
  • Generally, manage all matters from time of consultation until such matter is either closed or referred to a suitable pro bono attorney
  • Undertake all duties assigned to you to enable legal clinics to function effectively
  • Participate in projects that your department or office is working on
  • Assist in planning and executing seminars and other events held by ProBono.Org
Contributing to your own and the organisation’s knowledge development
  • Familiarise yourself with all relevant legislation and case law pertaining to matters that fall within the scope of your department
  • Write reports on successful matters to be used as part of ProBono.Org’s reporting and communications functions
Contributing to building ProBono.Org
  • Participate in strategic sessions and organisation meetings and processes to contribute to the growth and development of ProBono.Org
  • Attend workshops, meetings, and events that promote and assist in realising ProBono.Org’s objectives
  • Maintain and build strong relationships with NGOs, CBOs, law clinics and other pro bono and public interest law initiatives
  • An LLB degree
  • A demonstrable commitment to public interest law and social justice
  • Communication skills, especially writing skills
  • Computer literacy
  • High levels of organisation
  • Ability to learn quickly and understand the work of ProBono.Org
  • Commitment to social justice and access to justice
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people in a respectful way
  • Patience
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Interest in people and their problems
  • Knowledge of the law relating to the key focus areas of ProBono.Org
