Community Liaison Internship at Fem 2017

Fem supports the right of every woman to make safe and informed decisions about her body, most especially the decision to have an abortion. We focus on the practical issues that are often overlooked by existing healthcare systems: privacy, transparency, convenience, cost, and supportive environments.

Fem is a tool that leverages popular technology channels to remove obstacles between women and their decisions. We are currently available in South Africa with plans to grow.

Fem seeks to appoint a Community Liaison Intern to be based in Gauteng.

The purpose of this position is to build a career focused on women's rights, reproductive health and rights, and access to safe and legal abortion in South Africa.

You will develop skills in communication, organization, teamwork, advocacy, and time management.

  • Verification of service providers: identify and verify health facilities in and around Gauteng, that provide safe and legal abortion and contraceptive services against internal criteria. Training and support in best methods for both identifying and verifying safe, legal abortion service providers in South Africa will be provided
  • General admin: develop internal documents, edit documents and draft external communications
  • Data analysis: gather and interpret data, track progress, identify areas for improvement, and contribute to reporting.
  • Marketing activities: Contribute and execute our grassroots marketing activities by educating target audiences about our work, and driving engagement on our platforms. This will be done through activations, organizing and facilitating community events, and generally representing our brand in public.
  • Follow up calls with users: make follow up calls with Fem users who require additional help, processing complaints and following up on reviews
  • Partnerships: build and maintain partnerships with certain communities
  • Must already be living in Gauteng, South Africa
  • In the pursuit, or already in possession, of a college degree. We will also accept applications from individuals without a complete degree, but who have a strong professional background in sexual and reproductive health
  • Preferably has experience in a community or student organisation that champions women and reproductive rights
  • Independent access to a computer, internet, and home office space
  • Interest in reproductive rights and/or social justice
  • Experience in community work and/or promotions
  • Be comfortable in building a career in sexual and reproductive health
  • Ability to speak freely and with confidence about abortion
  • Articulate, great with communication, and gaining trust of stakeholders
  • Fast learner, results orientated and resourceful
  • Experience with data collection and analysis
  • Computer literate and smartphone skills (editing phone settings, installing new applications, uploading documents, etc.)
  • Fluent English and at least one other local language
  • Pro-choice, reliable, organised and a positive attitude
