Outdoor Education Intern at Maretlwane 2017

St John’s College seeks to appoint an Outdoor Education Intern at Maretlwane effective 1 January 2018.

The Maretlwane Centre for Outdoor Learning is situated in the foothills of the Magaliesberg Mountains near Mooinooi, NW Province. Maretlwane is dedicated to exposing young people to the beauty of the outdoors and the opportunities it provides.

Longer-stay Wilderness Schools, short-stay camps, and self-catering accommodation and camping are amongst the range of opportunities available to clients who visit Maretlwane. St John’s College, in partnership with the Maretlwane Trust, operates and manages the operation at Maretlwane. 

The scope of work at Maretlwane is very broad and exposes the suitably qualified candidate to an exciting range of learning opportunities.

The responsibilities include, inter alia:

  • Instruct students in all aspects of our Outdoor Education programs;
  • Host school and retreat groups, providing clear orientation instructions and announcements;
  • Ensure accommodation and meeting areas are ready for all guests;
  • Lifeguard to guests that may require this (if certified);
  • Communicate and model safe practices in all camp activities and areas of the camp;
  • Provide exceptional hospitality services in following through with the needs of all guests; and
  • Assist in secondary duties when needed in other areas of the camp.
The successful candidate will require the following essential skills and attributes:
  • Be studying or intending to study in 2018 towards a formal teaching qualification, in any phase of education, through UNISA (B Ed/PGCE) and/or Adventure Tourism, Nature Conservation or other related field (distance/part time);
  • Ability to work in a remote environment;
  • Have a passion for outdoor education and working with teenagers;
  • Have an interest and/or experience in activities like climbing, kloofing, hiking, trail running, first aid etc;
  • Must be prepared to work long hours during facilitation weeks and be flexible to the very wide range of tasks that the role demands;
  • Be willing to spend periods of up to six weeks resident on the property during outdoor programmes;
  • A CPR and SOR clearance certificate;
  • First aid level 1 qualified;
  • Code EB driving license (no PDP or PrDP required);
  • Ability to lead and inspire individuals, small and large groups;
  • Ability to communicate information effectively, efficiently and concisely in one-on-one and small and larger group situations;
  • Previous experience in teaching Outdoor Education and/ or a willingness to learn;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to multitask and handle stressful situations;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to hear, read and comprehend instructions;
  • Ability to interact with guests, campers and staff in a consistently pleasant manner;
  • Must exhibit a genuine love for kids and guests with a willingness to serve their interests first;
  • Average to above average written and oral communication skills, especially relating to fellow staff and clients; and
  • Be willing to support and embody the Christian ethos of the organisation.
Physical Requirements:
  • Adequate physical fitness and ability to walk, run and climb;
  • Willingness to be trained in all Outdoor Education activities; and
  • Flexibility in work hours as required to fulfil duties.
The position offers permanent on-site accommodation and meals are provided while on duty. Working hours will be flexible and subject to the needs of the role and organisation.
