What you will do in the role

During the 12-month graduate programme, you will be an integral part of our Legal team by providing legal and administration support to the Enforcement Counsel.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Manage files and cases relating to borrowers against whom we are instituting arbitration and other legal proceedings
  • Attend to the administration of the legal process by working closely with our Enforcement Counsel and Collections team
  • Ensure case folders are populated with the requirement evidentiary information and documentation
  • Record-keeping of all correspondence within the legal department and with external law firms, arbitration tribunals and arbitrators
  • Assist in drafting an enforcement policy which records process and policy
  • Prepare reports, databases, presentations and analyses on enforcement cases for various internal and external audiences
  • Instruct, liaise with and respond to requests for information from law firms and arbitrators
  • Assist in the track and trace process, conduct public (social media) profile monitoring and engage the services of tracing firms
  • Negotiate with borrowers to reach settlement plans, prepare presentations to internal committees to assess settlement offers from borrowers and assist with drafting settlement plans
  • Assist in creating, maintaining and organising a legal library for all legal options, guidance and other responses from external legal resources
  • Keep up to date with legislation and legislative changes, ensuring legal administration is compliant
  • Manage payments of legal and arbitration invoices, keeping track of spend and refunds
  • Establish and maintain a network library of jurisdictional enforcement counsel, tracing agents and translations services
  • Attend to the on-boarding of jurisdictional enforcement counsel, including negotiating deposits, terms of engagement letters and scrutinising invoices
What you will be measured on
  • Legal folders are complete, organised and easy to navigate
  • Enforcement policy is accurately recorded and implemented
  • Relevant information is communicated to Legal team/Committees timeously to enable decisions, when required
  • Routine requests and queries from external resources are dealt with timeously and effectively to reduce lag time in the legal process
  • Administrative support provided to Legal team ensures optimum management of priorities of the team 
  • Enforcement costs are accurately captured, allocated to the loan account of the borrower and added to the arbitration award and subsequent court order to ensure recovery from the borrower
  • Performance of external firms is monitored and cost are contained

Who we are looking for; track record must haves
  • LLB degree or equivalent legal qualification
  • Articles completed at a highly reputable law firm
  • Knowledge of legal research techniques, terminology and communication principles and practices
  • Experience in litigation and general legal commercial work
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Computer literate and highly proficient on MS Office
Experience that would be nice to have (but we’ll trade off if everything else fits)
