SABS Internship Opportunity 2020

SABS has 6 Internship Opportunities for recent graduates to provide general testing administrative support and to conduct laboratory operations within the Laboratory Services Division, according to required quality management system (QMS) and Accreditation requirements.

Main Responsibilities

1. Conduct tests and generate test results and report thereof

  • Plan and prepare to conduct tests
  • Receive and record all samples from clients before testing
  • Conduct manual or automated tests and generate test results using conventional test methods
  • Record test results
  • Interpret test methods

2. Apply calibration and maintenance procedures

  • Prepare and apply calibration procedures
  • Demonstrate the appropriate maintenance and basic trouble shooting requirements
  • Calibrate and verify test equipment
  • Process proficiency samples
  • Participate in in-house test validations

3. Participate in maintaining the quality management system and accreditation of the laboratory
  • Conduct all activities assigned to maintain the Quality Management System and Accreditation
  • Maintain all aspects of the laboratory’s quality system in accordance with the Quality Manual and the laboratory’s accreditation to the relevant ISO standard e.g. ISO 17025, OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice and OHS requirements
Adhere to SABS HSE policies and procedures

  • Ensure responsible housekeeping within the work area at all times or as directed by management
  • Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to all safety principles and procedures
  • Keep up with all the changes in the OHS requirements

5.  Adhere to service standards and deliver excellent customer service: 

  • Ensure efficient communication of all client requested needs to the relevant line manager
  • Provide good customer service by meeting the client requirements
  • Handle queries and resolve problems as they relate to departmental projects
  • Follow up on customer queries, complaints etc. where necessary
  • Provide timeous submission and compilation of all reports, time sheets, method files, etc.
  • Ensure stakeholders are updated with relevant feedback as required
  • Optimise own performance within the team
  • Participate as a productive team member by managing own performance in order to meet departmental objectives
  • Gather facts and information objectively with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Make logical decisions and use sound judgment in relation to tracking projects, tasks, assignments and reports
  • Plan, organize and coordinate relevant work duties as they relate to the department
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, set reasonable priorities and manage time and deadline driven workload
  • Contribute to diversity management initiatives and actively build business relationships
  • Seek guidance and mentorship from more experienced team members where necessary


  • BSc Degree or National Diploma in either: Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering (Heavy/Light Current), Industrial Engineering, and Microbiology
  • Relevant IT proficiency (MS Office suite, Internet etc.)
  • Willingness to learn (testing methods, calibration procedures, test report generation and other related on-the-job training)
