GP Legislature Information Centre Internship Programme 2021

 Description:  The GP Provincial  Legislature, GPL Information Centre Internship Programme 2021 is a 24month fixed term contract which provides workplace experience. 

It allows one to gain valuable work experience and provides the intern with an opportunity to obtain an understanding of the GPL, its values and work ethic. 

The applicants need to have completed at least their undergraduate degree or degree equivalent by the end of 2019.

The objective of the GPL Internship Programme is to assist graduates and people with qualifications to obtain workplace experience and the GPL to contribute to the up skilling of individuals as per the Skills Development Act.

The Information Centre supports Members to fulfill their constitutional obligations by:

Acquiring information resources, management of the resources and providing access  to information that supports and enhances research, debates, legislation, public participation, etc.

Providing library and information services that are key to the realization of the mandates and the strategic objectives of the GPL.

Serving the information needs of MPLs and Staff to deal effectively and efficiently with the demanding array of issues and tasks for which they require information and research.

The purpose of the Information Centre is to meet the information needs of the institution by rendering comprehensive library and information services that ensure access to relevant, dependable, current and unbiased information.

The intern will gain experience in the Information Centre by observing and learning how to :

Facilitate access to information through:

  • Processing of interlibrary loans
  • Administering of circulation of books
  • Handling of information requests
  • Shelving and shelve-reading
  • Updating of the library system with loan status
  • Conducting information searches using library management system and online information resources subscribed to
  • Collection Development and Management  

Identify relevant information resources that responds to information needs of the institution

  • Acquisition of information resources
  • Cataloguing of information resources
  • Classification and indexing of information resources
  • Weeding of information materials
  • Information consultancy

Develop User profiles

  • Selective dissemination of information
  • Current awareness services
  • To promote and increase usage of information products and services

Market library services

  • Train library users on how to access and search online information resources
  • Publish relevant information on the Library Portal 
  • Develop and disseminate  bibliographies

Competencies:

Time management • Interpersonal skills • Communication skills • Planning & Organising

Qualification Requirements:

  • A Degree and/or Diploma in the following fields; Library and Information Science,  Information Studies or related NQF equivalent qualification

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens;
  • Preference will be given to applicants who reside in Gauteng;
  • Must have no previous criminal convictions or cases pending;
  • Applicant must be between the age of 18-35;
  • Applicants must be unemployed, never employed in field of the advertised post and never participated in an internship programme;
  • It’s the applicants responsibility to have foreign qualifications evaluated by South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA);
