Apply now for the National Museum General Assistant Internship 2024. The National Museum, Bloemfontein is seeking dedicated and motivated young graduate to gain experience in an internship in the maintenance field. The intern should meet the criteria and requirements of the position.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide unemployed youth with an opportunity to gain work experience and enhance their employability in the job market. The intern will receive training and practical experience in general building maintenance.
Key Performance Areas (KPAs)
- KPA 1: Maintenance of all buildings and structures on the Oliewenhuis premises
- KPA 2: Assist with installations of exhibitions
- KPA 3: Assist with the conservation of outdoor sculptures
- KPA 4: Assist with general tasks, projects, and events
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Qualification: Minimum Grade 10 and NCV or N1 qualification in one of the following areas: building, plumbing, bricklaying, plastering, welding, or electrical work.
Knowledge:
- Familiarity with general handyman tasks and associated tools
- Understanding of workplace safety
Physical and Personal Attributes:
- Must be physically fit to lift and carry tools and heavy objects, and to climb ladders
- Responsive and hardworking individual
- Neat and organized
- Willingness to learn new skills, particularly in an art museum setting with heritage assets

Detailed Responsibilities
- KPA 1 – Maintenance of All Buildings and Structures on the Premises
Process Tasks:
- Inspect the buildings and outside structures weekly for any deterioration requiring maintenance, keeping a logbook of items that need attention and regularly updating the Curator.
- Respond to requests for inspections of reported issues.
Electrical Maintenance (excluding work reserved for qualified electricians):
- Remove old light bulbs and dispose of them properly.
- Requisition new light bulbs when stock is low.
- Replace light bulbs and perform related maintenance tasks, such as attaching plugs or making extensions.
General Maintenance Tasks:
- Address basic plumbing issues.
- Install, replace, or fasten information frames, boards, notices, and signage.
- Clean gutters and balconies of the Main Building.
- Perform sanding, painting, varnishing, plastering, and other cement-related work.
- Execute basic carpentry and welding of poles and other metal structures on the premises.
Tool and Material Maintenance:
- Safely and neatly store all maintenance tools and materials.
- Keep all allocated storerooms clean and organized.
- KPA 2 – Assist with Installations
Process Tasks:
- Assist with moving art and other equipment under the direction of exhibition staff.
- Help unload and load art for the museum.
- Support the installation and uninstallation of art exhibitions as directed by exhibition staff.
- Collaborate with the Oliewenhuis team and National Museum team on building tasks related to various exhibitions.
- KPA 3 – Assist with Conservation of Outdoor Sculptures
Process Tasks:
- Conduct effective weekly conservation of artworks on the African Carousel according to the schedule and methods managed by the Collection Manager.
- Perform weekly conservation of artworks in the Sculpture Park and maintain clean and readable artwork labels.
- Assist the Collections Manager with reinstalling or moving sculptures.
- Inspect Cement and Mosaic Project sculptures weekly and restore them per the schedule and methods managed by the Collection Manager.
- KPA 4 – Assist with General Tasks, Projects, and Events
Process Tasks:
- Handle administrative tasks such as making phone calls, taking messages, and providing information on the status of maintenance activities when requested.
- Keep users updated on expected task completion times and any associated delays.
- Maintain a daily log of activities and provide the Manager with a monthly report based on the logbook.
- Provide ad hoc relief at the gate and assist with set-up tasks.
- Support the Senior Caretaker with supervising outside contractors on site.
- Assist at openings and events, including after-hours security.
- Help other staff members with reasonable requests.
Qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities
Minimum Grade 10 and NCV or N1 qualification in any of the following areas: building, plumbing, bricklaying, plastering, welding, electrician.
Knowledge of general handyman duties ( working with manual and electrical tools)
Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety in the workplace.
Physical attributes:
Must be physically fit to lift heavy tools, heavy objects and to climb on a ladder.
Must be a hard worker, willing to learn new skills especially relating to an art museum and heritage assets.
Good interpersonal relations, team worker.
Must be willing to work outside normal working hours when requested to do so.
