The City of Johannesburg’s Environmental and Infrastructure Service Department is offering an internship opportunity for students in the Johannesburg community. The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is offering an internship program aimed at providing work-based training for students in the Johannesburg community. This initiative supports students requiring on-the-job exposure as part of their academic qualifications or those seeking experiential training post-qualification.

Key Information:

  • This internship is targeted at youth in Johannesburg who have never participated in an internship, except where it was irrelevant to their course of study.
  • The internship duration will not exceed 18 months.
  • Online applications must be submitted, along with relevant documents (Certified Qualifications, ID, CV).

Eligibility and Preference:

  • Open to all qualifying students in the Johannesburg community.
  • Preference will be given to current/past interns, EPWP participants, bursars, and learners meeting the position’s minimum requirements.
  • Only residents of the City of Joburg will be considered.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (NQF level 4) plus a degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, or related disciplines (NQF level 7).

Primary Function:

  • Develop and implement waste management policies and strategies for sustainable waste management services within the City, aligned with the City’s strategic objectives.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Legislative compliance in waste management.
  • Stakeholder management and community participation.
  • Business planning and reporting on project progress.
  • Risk management and project execution.

Competencies Required:

  • Leading Competencies:
  • ICT literacy (MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Project Management abilities.

Core Competencies:

  • Understanding of environmental issues and legislation.
  • Experience in environmental capacity building and waste management projects.
  • Knowledge of environmental policies and project principles.

Closing Date: The application deadline is Thursday, 30 January 2025.

Remuneration: The stipend is R9,960.45 per month (basic salary, no benefits) for students who have completed a qualification with a minimum of 360 credits.
